Service Overview

Replacement, extra and relocated radiators

Radiator work covers more ground than it sounds like. Replacing corroded panels that no longer heat, adding a radiator to a room that has never been warm enough, moving one to free a wall for a kitchen or a wardrobe, swapping a bathroom radiator for a heated towel rail, or fitting vertical radiators where horizontal wall space has run out.

What decides whether it works is sizing. Radiator output depends on height, length and panel type, single, double, or double with double convector fins, and each room needs an output that matches its heat loss. A large bay window, an external corner, a room above a garage or a solid-walled Victorian front room all need more output than the floor area alone suggests.

The second half of the job is balancing. Adding output anywhere changes how flow distributes across the whole system. Fit a new radiator without rebalancing and you often solve one cold room by creating another. We balance the system on completion using the lockshield valves, so each radiator takes its intended share.

We work on domestic properties only, across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Where a system is opened up, the inhibitor is restored afterwards, draining a system and refilling it without re-dosing is how corrosion problems start.

Who this is for

Rooms that never get warm

An undersized radiator, a balancing problem or a sludge-blocked panel, all fixable once the cause is identified.

Old, corroded or leaking radiators

Cold at the bottom, rust bleeding through paint, weeping valves, or panels that have been on the wall for thirty years.

Kitchen and bathroom projects

Radiators moved to free a wall, or replaced with a heated towel rail sized to actually warm the room, not just dry a towel.

Extensions and new rooms

Extra output added with the whole system's capacity checked first, so the rest of the house does not suffer for it.

Leave It and It Gets Worse

Why the cold room usually stays cold

People replace a radiator because a room is cold and then find the new one is no better. That is almost always because the radiator was never the problem. Either it is starved of flow because the system has never been balanced, or the bottom of the circuit is packed with magnetite sludge, or the output was undersized for the room in the first place and the replacement was chosen to fit the same brackets.

Fitting radiators onto a contaminated system carries a second cost. Every drain-down and refill without inhibitor brings fresh oxygenated water into contact with steel, accelerating the corrosion that produces the sludge in the first place. A few years of that and the new panels are cold at the bottom too, the pump is straining, and the boiler is being blamed for a system problem.

There is also the damage risk. Radiator valves and tails are common leak points, particularly on old, brittle pipework in solid floors. A weeping tail behind a sofa can run for months before anyone sees it, and by then it is flooring and skirting rather than a fitting.

Common mistakes we are called out to

  • Choosing a replacement radiator by the size of the old one instead of the room's heat loss.
  • Adding radiators to a system already running at its capacity, so everywhere else cools down.
  • Draining and refilling without re-dosing inhibitor.
  • Never balancing the system, then assuming the boiler is at fault.
  • Ignoring a radiator that is hot at the top and cold at the bottom, which is sludge, not air.

Our Process

How the work runs, step by step

The same sequence every time, so you always know what happens next and what it costs before it happens.

  1. 1

    Step 1: Room assessment

We measure the room, take account of glazing, external walls and insulation, and check what the rest of the system is doing before recommending anything.

  2. 2

    Step 2: Sizing and specification

Output is calculated per room and the radiator type chosen to suit, panel, vertical, low surface temperature or towel rail, along with valves and any pipework changes.

  3. 3

    Step 3: Priced agreement

You get the cost before we start. Repair visits are £80 + VAT including the first hour; larger radiator and pipework projects are quoted in writing first.

  4. 4

    Step 4: Installation

System drained where needed, brackets set properly, pipework altered or extended, thermostatic and lockshield valves fitted, and old radiators removed and taken away.

  5. 5

Step 5: Refill, dose and balance

System refilled, inhibitor restored, air vented, every joint checked under pressure and the whole system balanced radiator by radiator.

  6. 6

    Step 6: Completion and guarantee

Heat-up checked in front of you, valves explained, area left clean, and a 12-month workmanship guarantee on most work.

The Benefits

What you actually get for the money

Quick, contained jobs

Most radiator replacements are a same-day job with the heating back on before we leave.

Fitted safely and soundly

Properly set brackets, sound joints and pressure-tested work by a Gas Safe registered engineer with £2m public liability cover.

Protection for the whole system

Inhibitor restored on every refill and magnetic filtration recommended where it is warranted, so the new panels do not silt up.

Comfort where you actually need it

Correct output in each room and a balanced system means even heat rather than a hot hallway and a cold bedroom.

Lower gas use

Thermostatic valves on every radiator let you stop paying to heat rooms nobody is using.

Tidy work in occupied homes

Dust sheets, floor protection and old radiators taken away: no leftover mess for you to deal with.

In Detail

Radiator types, valves and system considerations

The specification detail behind a job that looks simple from the outside.

Panel types and output

Type 11 single panel radiators are slim and suit small rooms or restricted spaces. Type 21 and Type 22 double panels give far more output in the same wall length, which is usually what a cold room actually needs. Convector fins increase output further without increasing the footprint.

Where wall space is tight, vertical radiators deliver the required output in a tall, narrow format, common in hallways, kitchens and modern conversions. Low surface temperature radiators are appropriate where there are safety considerations for children, elderly or vulnerable occupants.

Towel rails and bathrooms

A heated towel rail is not automatically a like-for-like replacement for a bathroom radiator. Many rails produce considerably less heat output than the panel they replace, so the bathroom ends up cold even though the towels are warm. We check the room's requirement before specifying one.

Where the room needs both, options include a larger or dual-fuel rail, or a rail combined with a small panel radiator, so the bathroom stays warm in winter and the rail can still be used in summer.

Valves, pipework and materials

Every radiator we fit gets a thermostatic valve on one end and a lockshield on the other, which is what makes room-by-room control and system balancing possible. Angled, straight and corner valves are chosen to suit the pipework route rather than forcing the pipework to suit the valve.

Pipework is copper, correctly sized, clipped and supported, and adapted where old microbore or awkward solid-floor runs are involved. Where existing tails are brittle or corroded we will say so and price replacing them rather than risk a leak behind a new radiator.

When radiators are the symptom, not the cause

A radiator cold at the bottom across the whole house means system contamination. In that situation new panels alone are wasted money, power flushing, correct inhibitor dosing and a magnetic filter are what restore heat output across the system.

Similarly, if several radiators run cool while others are scalding, the answer is balancing and possibly pump or valve work rather than replacement. We will tell you which of these your system actually needs before quoting for new radiators.

Questions

Radiator Installation, your questions answered

Anything not covered here, call 07792 651029 and ask Chris directly.

How much does it cost to fit a radiator in Nottingham?

It depends on the radiator specified and whether pipework has to be altered or extended. Straightforward repair-type visits are £80 + VAT including the first hour on site, and larger radiator or pipework projects are quoted in writing first.

How long does a radiator replacement take?

A like-for-like replacement is usually a couple of hours. Relocations, new radiators on new pipework, or several radiators in one visit take longer, and we tell you the expected time before starting.

Can I just have a bigger radiator to warm a cold room?

Sometimes, but not always. If the system is unbalanced or the radiator is sludged at the bottom, a bigger panel will not fix it. We check the cause first so you are not paying for the wrong solution.

Can you add a radiator to my existing system?

Usually yes, provided the boiler and pipework have the capacity. We check that first, adding output to a system already at its limit is what makes the rest of the house cooler.

Are heated towel rails as warm as a radiator?

Often not. Many rails produce much less output than the radiator they replace, so we check the bathroom's heat requirement and specify a rail, a larger rail, or a rail plus panel accordingly.

Will you balance the system afterwards?

Yes. Balancing across all radiators is part of the job, and so is restoring inhibitor after any drain-down. It is the difference between even heat and a house with hot and cold rooms.

Do you take the old radiators away?

Yes, removal and disposal of the old radiators is included, and the area is left clean.

Is the work guaranteed?

A 12-month workmanship guarantee applies to most work, with terms varying for certain repairs, and we will confirm what applies to your job.

Which areas do you cover?

Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield, Hucknall, Ilkeston, Beeston, Long Eaton, Matlock and Chesterfield, on domestic properties only.
