Service Overview

What a full central heating installation covers

A central heating installation is a design job before it is an installation job. Every room has a heat loss figure driven by its size, its external walls, its glazing and its insulation. Add those up and you know what the boiler needs to deliver; work through them individually and you know what size each radiator has to be. Get that arithmetic right and the house heats evenly on a lower flow temperature, which is where the running cost savings come from.

We install complete systems for new builds and extensions, and full upgrades for homes where the existing heating has come to the end of its life, replacing boiler, pipework, radiators and controls as one coordinated job rather than patching a 30-year-old system around a new appliance.

As a Baxi approved installer and Vaillant registered installer, new boilers can carry manufacturer warranties of 5, 7 or 10 years depending on the model chosen. The survey and the written quote are free, the installation price is fixed, and larger projects that run across several visits are arranged as staged payments.

Domestic only, across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Chris Smith has been in the trade 23 years since 2003, an apprenticeship at British Gas, then E.ON and Vaillant, and CSGHP Ltd has been running since 2019.

Who this is for

New builds and self-builds

A system designed alongside the build, with pipework routed before floors go down and radiators sized to the finished insulation values.

Extensions and conversions

Extra rooms change the whole heat requirement. Adding radiators to an already-stretched system is why the rest of the house goes cold.

Homes with tired old systems

Microbore that keeps blocking, radiators corroded from the inside, no thermostatic valves, and a boiler working far harder than it should.

Properties with no central heating

Electric heaters, gas fires or a system stripped out years ago: a full installation from the gas supply through to the controls.

Leave It and It Gets Worse

What happens when a system is fitted without being designed

The classic failure is a house that has cold rooms and hot rooms at the same time. It is almost never a boiler fault. It is undersized radiators in the rooms that lose most heat, oversized ones elsewhere, and a system that has never been balanced, so the flow takes the shortest path and the far bedroom gets whatever is left.

The second failure is contamination. Old steel radiators and pipework that have run for decades with no inhibitor are full of magnetite sludge. Connect that to a new boiler without flushing, dosing and filtering and you will have a noisy, inefficient system within two winters and a warranty claim the manufacturer can reject.

The third is money leaking quietly. No thermostatic radiator valves, a badly sited thermostat, a heating programme nobody has set properly, and a boiler running a higher flow temperature than it needs, every one of those adds gas consumption for no additional comfort. Over the ten-year life of a warranty that is a significant sum, and it never appears as a fault anybody calls out about.

Common mistakes we are called out to

  • Adding radiators for an extension without recalculating the whole system's heat requirement.
  • Reusing badly corroded pipework and radiators to save money, then losing warranty cover on the new boiler.
  • Accepting an estimate with no room-by-room radiator sizing behind it.
  • Skipping a flush, inhibitor dose and magnetic filter on a system that has run for decades untreated.
  • Leaving the system unbalanced, then blaming the boiler for the cold bedroom.

Our Process

How the work runs, step by step

The same sequence every time, so you always know what happens next and what it costs before it happens.

  1. 1

    Step 1: Survey and design

Room-by-room measurement, heat loss assessment, hot water demand, gas supply capacity and pipe routing all worked out before anything is priced.

  2. 2

    Step 2: Free written quote

You get a fixed quote listing the boiler, radiators, controls, pipework and warranty length, with the expected duration of the work stated up front.

  3. 3

    Step 3: Preparation

Materials ordered, dates agreed, protection down, water and gas isolated, and old appliances, radiators and redundant tanks removed and taken away.

  4. 4

    Step 4: Installation

Boiler, cylinder where specified, flow and return pipework, correctly sized radiators, thermostatic valves, magnetic filter, flue and insulated condensate all installed.

  5. 5

Step 5: Flush, commission and balance

System flushed and dosed with inhibitor, boiler gas rate and pressures set, combustion analysed, controls programmed, and every radiator balanced room by room.

  6. 6

    Step 6: Handover and guarantee

Controls demonstrated, paperwork and Building Regulations notification handled, manufacturer warranty registered, and a 12-month workmanship guarantee on most work.

The Benefits

What you actually get for the money

An even, comfortable house

Radiators sized per room and balanced on commissioning, so the back bedroom warms up at the same rate as the lounge.

Safety and compliance handled

Gas Safe registered No. 593241, ACS assessed, Building Regulations notification included, £2m public liability cover in place.

Longer system life

Clean water, correct inhibitor, a magnetic filter and properly supported pipework are what carry a system through a 10-year warranty and beyond.

Lower running costs

Correct sizing, thermostatic valves and a properly set programme cut gas use without asking anyone to be colder.

Predictable cost and timescale

Free survey, free written quote, fixed price, and staged payments where the project runs across several visits.

Careful work in a lived-in home

Floor protection, tidy pipe runs and mess cleared daily: including work carried out in a Grade II listed property.

In Detail

System design detail: pipework, radiators and controls

These are the decisions that separate a heating system that works from one that is merely installed.

System layout and pipework

Most modern domestic installations use a two-pipe layout: a flow main to every radiator and a separate return, which gives each radiator the same water temperature and makes balancing meaningful. Older one-pipe and microbore arrangements deliver progressively cooler water along the circuit and block far more easily.

Pipe sizing is not guesswork. Undersized pipework starves the far end of the system and makes the pump work harder; oversized pipework wastes water volume and slows response. Runs through unheated spaces are insulated, and clipping and support are done properly so the system does not creak and knock as it heats.

Boiler and hot water choice

A combi suits homes with one bathroom and no need for simultaneous hot water. Where there are two or more bathrooms, a system boiler with an unvented cylinder delivers strong mains-pressure hot water to several outlets at once, and we are G3 qualified and WaterSafe registered, so the cylinder side is covered in house.

A regular boiler with a vented cylinder remains sensible in some older properties, particularly where incoming mains flow is poor. The survey decides which of the three fits your house, and the quote explains why.

Radiators, sizing and variations

Radiator output is set by height, length and whether the panel is single, double or double-with-double-convector. A room with a large bay window and an external corner needs more output than the same-sized room in the middle of the house. We size room by room, not by what was there before.

Options include standard panel radiators, vertical radiators where wall space is tight, low-surface-temperature radiators where there are safety considerations, and heated towel rails in bathrooms. Every radiator gets a thermostatic valve and a lockshield so the system can be balanced.

Controls, commissioning and water treatment

Controls are where efficiency is won or lost: a correctly sited room thermostat, a proper programmer or timer, thermostatic valves throughout, and a cylinder thermostat where there is stored hot water. Setting them up and showing you how they work is part of the handover, not an afterthought.

Water treatment is non-negotiable on any system we install. Full flush or power flush where the existing system is dirty, correct inhibitor dose, and a magnetic filter fitted to catch what circulates afterwards. It protects the boiler warranty and it is the reason the system still heats evenly in ten years.

Questions

Central Heating Installation, your questions answered

Anything not covered here, call 07792 651029 and ask Chris directly.

How much does central heating installation cost in Nottingham?

It depends on the number of radiators, the boiler specified, the pipework routes and the property, so there is no meaningful single figure. The survey and the written quote are free, and the installation price is fixed rather than an estimate.

How long does a full central heating installation take?

A full system is usually several days rather than one. The expected duration is stated in your quote before you agree to anything, and larger projects are set up with staged payments.

Can you install central heating in a house that has none?

Yes, that includes the gas supply arrangements to the boiler, full pipework, radiators, controls and hot water provision. It starts with a survey so the system is designed for the property.

Do I need new radiators, or can the old ones be reused?

It depends on their condition and whether they are correctly sized for each room. We will tell you honestly which can stay and which are past it, rather than automatically replacing everything or reusing corroded panels.

Do you install heating for extensions?

Yes, and we check the whole system's capacity rather than just adding radiators, extending a system that is already at its limit is the usual reason the rest of the house cools down.

What warranty comes with a new system?

New boilers carry a manufacturer warranty of 5, 7 or 10 years depending on the boiler chosen, as we are a Baxi approved installer and Vaillant registered installer. Most of our work also carries a 12-month workmanship guarantee.

Will you handle Building Regulations and Gas Safe notification?

Yes. Notification, compliance paperwork and manufacturer warranty registration are all part of the job, and you receive the documentation at handover.

Does the system need flushing during installation?

Any system we install is flushed and dosed with inhibitor, and we fit a magnetic filter. Where an existing system is heavily contaminated we will recommend power flushing and price it in the quote.

Do you install central heating in Derby too?

Yes: Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield, Hucknall, Ilkeston, Beeston, Long Eaton, Matlock and Chesterfield, on domestic properties only.
