Local Coverage

Boiler and heating work across Matlock and the Derbyshire Dales

About 20 miles from Underwood, up through the A38 and A615 into the Derwent valley.

Matlock sits in the Derwent valley on the edge of the Peak District, roughly 20 miles from our Underwood base. We cover the town along with Matlock Bath, Darley Dale, Tansley, Wirksworth and Cromford: the villages along the valley and up the surrounding hillsides.

The property here is different from our valley-floor Nottinghamshire work. Much of it is gritstone or limestone, solid-walled, sometimes listed or in a conservation area, with thick walls, deep window reveals and a lot of exposure to wind and weather. Heating sized for a modern insulated house will not keep these properties comfortable, which is why heat loss is calculated room by room rather than assumed.

Matlock is also higher and colder than the areas closer to Nottingham. Winter here is longer and harder on a system: condensate freezes more readily, older systems struggle to hold temperature on the worst nights, and hard water from the limestone geology scales combi heat exchangers faster. All of that is factored into what we specify.

Being further out, we schedule Matlock work to planned slots for services, surveys and installations, with breakdowns given a same or next-day visit wherever the diary allows during our opening hours, Monday to Friday 8:00am to 6:30pm and Saturday 8:30am to 12:00pm. Work is domestic only, and landlord CP12 certificates are from £85 + VAT with a service.

What that means for Matlock

Dales coverage

Matlock, Matlock Bath, Darley Dale, Tansley, Wirksworth and Cromford.

Stone-built and period property

Solid walls and high exposure mean radiator and boiler sizing has to be calculated, not guessed.

Hard-water aware

Limestone geology scales combi heat exchangers, we check hot water performance at every service.

Careful in sensitive homes

We have worked in listed property before, including a Grade II listed boiler replacement carried out with real care.

Why Us

Why Matlock homeowners and landlords call us

Every claim on this page comes from our own accreditations, insurance and published prices: nothing invented, nothing exaggerated.

Sizing done by calculation

Solid-wall stone property loses heat far faster than a modern build. We calculate heat loss room by room before specifying a boiler output or radiator size.

Careful work in period homes

One of our documented customers had a boiler replaced in a Grade II listed home and described the work as clean, careful and professional throughout.

Gas Safe No. 593241, Baxi approved installer, Vaillant registered installer, ACS, City & Guilds NVQ Level 3, G3, BPEC, APHC and WaterSafe, with £2m public liability cover.

Local Property Issues

Why Dales properties are harder on a heating system

Altitude, exposure, stone construction and hard water combine to shorten the life of anything under-specified.

Solid stone walls and high heat loss

Gritstone and limestone walls have no cavity to insulate and hold cold for a long time. A room in Matlock can need considerably more radiator output than a same-sized room in a 1990s house, and getting that wrong is why so many Dales rooms never feel properly warm.

It also affects how the system should be run. Solid-wall houses respond slowly, so longer running periods at lower flow temperatures usually give better comfort and lower bills than short, hot bursts, provided the radiators are sized to allow it.

Exposure, altitude and frozen condensate

Higher ground and open valley sides mean lower overnight temperatures and stronger wind chill than we see in Nottingham. Boilers with external condensate runs freeze and lock out, typically in the early hours of the coldest night of the year.

Where at all possible we route condensate internally. Where it must run outside, it is upsized and properly insulated. It is a small detail at installation that removes a recurring winter emergency.

Hard water and limescale

Water in limestone country is hard, and that shows up first in combi boilers, where the plate heat exchanger scales and hot water flow gradually falls away. Left long enough the exchanger is beyond cleaning and needs replacing.

Scale also affects unvented cylinders and shower fittings. We check hot water performance at every service, so a scaling exchanger gets identified while it is still a service issue rather than a replacement.

Listed and conservation-area constraints

In listed and conservation-area property, flue positions, pipe routes and external terminations are constrained, and the work has to be neat because there is nowhere to hide it. That gets established at survey, not discovered on installation day.

Interior work needs the same care: lifting boards in older properties, protecting stone floors and original features, and keeping pipe runs discreet. It takes longer, and we price for doing it properly rather than quickly.

Tell us the postcode, the property and the symptom. We confirm what the visit costs before we set off.

  2. 2

    Inspection on site

Boiler, controls, radiators, cylinder and system water all checked: not just the part that stopped.

    Diagnosis and written price

You get the cause, the options and a price. Repairs beyond the first hour are quoted before we carry on.

  4. 4

    The work carried out

Dust sheets down, gas work signed off by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and the area left clean.

  5. 5

    Testing and commissioning

Gas rate and combustion checked, system rebalanced, controls set up and hot water performance verified.

  6. 6

    Handover and guarantee
