Plumbing done by a heating engineer, not a handyman

Most household plumbing sits alongside the heating system rather than separate from it: the cylinder that stores your hot water, the pipework that feeds the radiators, the mains that fills the system, the valves that isolate it. Having the same Gas Safe registered engineer look after both means a leak under the floor is dealt with in the context of the whole system, inhibitor levels, pressure, corrosion and all.

That G3 point is worth spelling out. An unvented cylinder is a pressurised vessel with real safety devices, expansion vessel, pressure relief, temperature relief, and it is not legal for an unqualified person to work on. If your hot water comes from a mains-pressure cylinder rather than a loft tank, the person servicing or repairing it must hold G3.

Work is priced honestly. A repair visit is £80 + VAT and includes the first hour on site; anything further is priced and agreed with you before we carry on. Larger pipework or cylinder installation work is quoted in writing first.

Water damage escalates faster than anything else in a home

A slow leak is the most expensive small fault in a house. Water tracks along joists and under floor coverings, so the stain on the ceiling is rarely above the leak. Left running, it moves from a dried-out patch to swollen chipboard, ruined plaster and, eventually, electrics, and buildings insurers take a dim view of damage that was visible and ignored.

On the heating side, a leak you cannot see is also draining system pressure. Every top-up brings fresh oxygenated water into steel radiators, which corrodes them from the inside and produces the sludge that blocks heat exchangers and burns out pumps. What starts as a weeping valve ends as a boiler repair.

Unvented cylinders carry a different risk. Their expansion vessel and relief valves are safety-critical. When the vessel loses its charge you get pressure surges, weeping relief valves and eventually a discharge that dumps hot water, and an unqualified repair on a pressurised vessel is genuinely dangerous, not just non-compliant.

Unvented hot water cylinders

Unvented cylinders give mains-pressure hot water to every outlet without a loft tank, which is why they suit larger homes and multiple bathrooms. They are pressurised vessels, so they carry an expansion vessel, a pressure relief valve, a temperature and pressure relief valve and a tundish discharge, all of which need checking annually.

We are G3 qualified, which is the legal requirement for working on them, and WaterSafe registered. That covers servicing, expansion vessel recharging or replacement, relief valve faults, immersion and thermostat work, and full cylinder replacement where a vessel has reached the end of its life.

Leaks, pipework and valves

Leak tracing on heating and mains pipework, remaking failed joints, replacing corroded sections, fitting isolation valves where none exist, and rerouting or extending pipework for kitchen and bathroom alterations.

Materials matter for longevity. Copper with soldered or properly made mechanical joints, correct clipping and support, insulation on runs through cold spaces, and full-bore isolation valves at sensible points so the next repair does not mean draining the whole house.

Taps, toilets and everyday fittings

Tap replacement and reseating, mixer and shower valve faults, cistern and fill valve repairs, running or non-flushing toilets, waste and trap leaks, outside taps with proper backflow protection, and washing machine or dishwasher connections.

Where poor mains pressure or flow is the real complaint, we check the incoming supply, stop tap and internal restrictions before anyone spends money on new fittings that will not fix it.

Where plumbing meets the heating system

Because we are heating engineers first, plumbing that touches the system is handled as system work: inhibitor restored after draining, air removed and radiators rebalanced, and pressure watched rather than assumed.

That also means honest advice on what is worth doing. If a repeat leak is a symptom of internal corrosion across old pipework or radiators, we will say so and quote the wider work in writing rather than returning for the same fault every few months.

How much does a plumber cost in Nottingham?

Do you handle emergency leaks?

We respond same or next-day wherever possible during opening hours: Monday to Friday 8:00am–6:30pm and Saturday 8:30am–12:00pm. If water is actively escaping, turn off the stop tap first.

Can you work on an unvented hot water cylinder?

By elimination: isolating circuits, watching pressure behaviour, checking accessible joints and appliances, and reading where the water is tracking. That narrows the location before any floor comes up.
